Calm excitment as you confidently approach passport control…
Only to hear the words “sorry chum, your passport’s invalid”!
This is something that’s happening to around 100,000 UK holiday makers each year, according to travel expert Simon Calder.
Why?
The 10 year rule!
Something many of us are blissfully unaware of.
So what is it?
EU countries now require UK passports to have been issued less than 10 years BEFORE the departure date; due to Brexit changes.
What’s the impact?
Data indicates 32 million people might have passports considered over 10 years old by these standards, with instances of travelers being denied boarding, highlighting the personal disruptions caused.
Other Specific Requirements?
Passports must also be valid for at least three months beyond the planned return date. This rule affects travel to all EU countries, as well as Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, but not Ireland.
What can you do?
Awareness of this is vital. Checking passport validity well in advance of travel dates / booking will help avoid being caught out.
What else can you do?
